Kate Jackson and
Brooke Nevin star
in this Canadian
thriller production.
British Columbia’s
busiest independent
production company,
Insight Film
Studios produced
an exciting new
movie of the week,
A Mother Behind
Bars. This is
just one of the many
large-and small
screen productions
on Insight’s slate
this year. A Mother
Behind Bars aka A
Daughter's
Conviction aka
The Perfect
Suspect is a
taut, nail-biting
drama about a woman
who has been
imprisoned for the
brutal murder of her
husband.
Joanne "Jo" Avery is
somewhat estranged
from her difficult
and charismatic
mother Maureen. When
beloved Seattle
Tribune columnist
and community hero
Jack McBride is
bludgeoned to death
in his home, the
only suspect is his
wealthy wife of six
months, Maureen
Avery. Found passed
out on a combination
of antidepressants
and alcohol, she has
no recollection of
the night in
question. Although
all evidence points
directly to Maureen,
her daughter Jo
Avery sets out to
prove her mother’s
innocence. As her
investigation
deepens, it seems
there’s no one in
town who wasn’t
somehow caught up in
Jack’s scandalous
secret life of
gambling and
womanizing. Now it’s
up to Jo alone to
figure out who’s
guilty of Jack’s
murder and to clear
her mother’s name.
The show began
filming locally on
September 14, 2006.
Directed by David
Winkler and
executive produced
by Tim Johnson, A
Mother Behind Bars
stars Kate Jackson
in the title role,
Brooke Nevin (I’ll
Always Know What You
Did Last Summer) as
Jo, and Steve
Francis as Jack
McBride.
The movie premiered
November 19th 2006
on the Lifetime
Channel (Sunday Nov
19 09:00P).
OK-maybe I'm being
biased because I'm
such a huge Kate
Jackson fan, but, I
still loved this
movie! The concept
is very easy and
very "lifetime":
Joanne (Jo) is home
for spring break in
Seattle. What
greets her? Her dead
stepfather and her
unconscious mother
with a gun next to
her. Looks bad, huh?
And from the get go
it is bad. Still,
despite all evidence
pointing to her
mother (played in a
very peculiar role
by Kate Jackson) Jo
sets out to prove
that her mother is
not the killer but a
red herring. Oh, did
I mention there are
plenty of them in
this movie? What
most people need to
remember first and
foremost is this:
it's on lifetime! If
you know the
formula, this one
will be no different
for you. But, this
one is better than
the average lifetime
flick- great cast, a
storyline that
challenges the mind
and an ending that
will knock you flat
on your rear-hey,
did it to me! If
you're looking for a
mind-numbing
no-brinier, this
isn't your film.
Looking for a
mind-bending
who-done it that has
a great script and
cast? Look no
further-oh, and long
live Kate Jackson!
